Course Description

On a schedule of 35 weeks, we will explore modern world history interwoven with the history of Christian service, missions, and revivals, from the Napoleonic wars through the Korean War, including:

  • Napoleonic wars and their lingering effects on Europe;
  • Modern missions movement and its impact around the world;
  • The Church’s response to the “faceless masses” of the Industrial Revolution;
  • Growth of the U.S. on the world stage;
  • Colonization of Africa, East Asia, and the rise of nationalism;
  • South America’s independence, European entanglements, and American determinism;
  • Balance of Power in Europe and its limitations;
  • European alliances and worldwide revivals;
  • World War I & II and their aftermath.

This course approaches history through the twin threads of human suffering/destruction and God’s redemption/love. We will study this period of history with the expectation that, from time to time and place to place, there will be visible evidence of God’s redeeming power and love at work in people and nations. Therefore, we will stop at various “vistas” along the way to view these examples of God’s heart, particularly in Christian service to the poor of the Industrial Revolution, world missions, and revivals history. Rather than a “memorize names/dates/places” approach, students will experience an enriched “storytelling of history” approach, making it something far deeper—a redemptive view of history.

“Taking a course with Mrs Waring during my sophomore year in high school was one of the best classes of my life. The biblical principles that were introduced were well woven into the material. I was also amazed at the learning process. It wasn’t just tests, names, and dates, but also an interactive environment where I could try new things, meet new people, and engage with others. It brought out a level of creativity in me that has only continued to grow ever since, and I am very thankful to Mrs Warring for making that happen! You made my learning time an awesome experience!”

“My twin boys (14) have taken Diana’s online class this year and it has been an amazing experience. We love the structure of her materials and how church history is brought in right along with all the other history. We love the way that her program encourages kids to dig deeper into the time period through creative projects. Diana’s positive and encouraging approach has inspired my boys so much that it is really hard to just give her 5 stars. She deserves many more stars than that. I love that her class and her materials take into consideration various learning styles. Diana is an excellent teacher and I highly recommend her materials but especially her online classes. We are looking forward to participating in another class of hers next year.”
